What's your favorite holiday movie? Americans praise the 'Home Alone' films and 'The Grinch' among others

The opening sequence introduces protagonist and antagonist with parallel imagery, and as the audience gets to know Becky, they slip effortlessly in and out of her headspace. She sees things, and she reacts, and as the title character, Lulu Wilson performs more than capably as part of a clever film language. After school gets out, as well as neo-Nazis from prison, Becky is spirited off to a lakefront vacation home in the woods, and the production makes the most of this single location. It never feels like the characters are bumping up against the walls which then wobble. Claustrophobia is not the aim here, but a malleable sense of space, as Becky and Dominick Lewis engage in their bloody cat-and-mouse game.

Christopher Hooton of The Independent also praised the film, calling the film-within-a-film Angels with Filthy Souls "a fond footnote in cinema history". Matt Talbot from Simcoe.com said that the Wet Bandits were "fantastic" and "never old" on "repeat viewings". Michael Walsh of Nerdist noted the church scene as "One of the best, most touching scenes ". Senta Moses, who played Tracy, recalled in 2020 that one of the most difficult scenes to shoot was the family's run through O'Hare International Airport to catch their flight. While it does not last long, it required several days to film. "There were thousands of extras, all expertly choreographed so none of us would be in danger running at full speed through the American Airlines terminal", she told The Hollywood Reporter.

One also pointed out another detail in the scene they further explained why the parents did not notice. Another fan on Reddit also offered another explanation as how Kevin was left home alone. Many fans were also shocked they had never noticed that subtle detail in the scene. Internet Archive's in-browser video player requires JavaScript to be enabled. Let's jump ahead a couple of decades to find the time when festive films really found their stride, starting with A Christmas Story. Newsweek look at the ages of certain Christmas movie characters like (L-R) John McLane, Kate McCallister, Scott Calvin and Clark Griswold. It completely changes the franchise's dynamic, and you can't really figure out which side you're rooting for. Though the movie is far from perfect, Home Sweet Home Alone finally manages to switch up the Home Alone formula, giving audiences a different spin on the well-known story. "I actually really like 'A Christmas Story,'" Reagan, from Missouri, said. "It was my dad's favorite movie growing up, and then I think it just kind of fell on me."

And it wasn’t Old Man Marley, the Wet Bandits, or the furnace in Kevin’s basement that had me quaking in my boots. No, it was the specter of a man whose scowl and withering tone conjured up memories of about four different family relatives all at once. The plot is so implausible that it makes it hard for us to really care about the plight of the kid. What works in the other direction, however, and almost carries the day, is the gifted performance by young Macaulay Culkin, as Kevin. Culkin is the little boy who co-starred with John Candy in "Uncle Buck," and here he has to carry almost the whole movie.

Still, it's definitely a great Easter egg for fans of the original movies who will surely recognize him. Bamman certainly believes it was a “terrible mistake” to jettison the McCallister family cast, particularly as it would have been an opportunity to further flesh out his role. Then again, in doing so, it may even have turned Uncle Frank into a more likable character, losing his villain status in the process.

Buzz McCallister

Initially, he recalls being “almost mobbed” wherever he ran into fans eager to meet everyone’s least favorite uncle. Yet the dawn of the internet saw Uncle Frank become the subject of any number of weird and wonderful fan theories that only further enhanced his status as the true villain of the piece. The most prominent of these centered on the notion that Uncle Frank was, in fact, a criminal mastermind who hired Harry and Marv to rob his brother’s house. Becky arrives at her miniature Die Hard adventure more broken than Kevin. Her mother died of cancer two years ago, and she hasn’t moved on.

Gleiberman said that " Hughes is pulling our strings as though he'd never learn to do anything else". Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian gave the film three out of five and praised Culkin's "vivid screen presence, almost incandescent with confidence". However, he criticised his acting, calling it "a bit broad and mannered". Ali Barclay of the BBC wrote "Culkin walks a fine line between annoyance and endearment throughout the film." He also called Home Alone "a film which manages to capture some of the best qualities of Christmas". " Hughes wrote eight pages of notes that developed into the screenplay. Imagining that children are naturally most scared of robbers, Hughes also worked that aspect into the plot of the film.

The commercial contains shot for shot remakes of scenes from the film. Google Assistant helps Kevin set up the house to look active by remotely turning on lights, devices, and setting up cutouts of people, to have the thieves parked in a van outside steer clear of the house. Additionally, Joe Pesci also reprised his role as Harry, only for his voice making a small cameo. Pesci later appeared in another ad where he watches the short with his friends and jokes about his brief cameo. Principal photography took place from February 14, 1990, to May 8, 1990, over a course of 83 days. It was built in the gym and empty swimming pool of the former New Trier High School building, previously used by Hughes for Uncle Buck and Ferris Bueller's Day Off, where the production company had already set up its offices.

The problem is that it goes missing and they believe that Max, a kid who visited during an open house, stole it. Thankfully, the story focuses on a new family and a new house, so at least it doesn't drag Kevin McCallister into this, or feel as desperate as Home Alone 4. Adding to the disaster is the bland and lifeless story where Kevin is now staying in the ritzy mansion of his dad's new girlfriend.

After over nine months into its run, the film had earned 16x its debut weekend and ended up making a final gross of $285,761,243, the top-grossing film of its year in North America. The film is listed in the Guinness World Records as the highest-grossing live-action comedy ever and held the record until it was overtaken by The Hangover Part II in 2011. Daniel Stern was cast as Marv, but before shooting started, he was told that the production schedule had been extended from six weeks to eight. He dropped out after as he would not be paid more for the extended schedule. Daniel Roebuck was hired to replace him, but after two days of rehearsal, Columbus felt he was lacking chemistry with Pesci and brought back Stern. Roebuck later said that, although he was upset to be fired from the production, he now believed the experience was "a little blip of unimportance".

Here’s a view later in the movie showing the green walls and red carpeting of the upstairs hallway. BTW, in real life, this house did NOT look anything like this! This color scheme and decorating were done specifically for the movie. Upon its release, the movie was initially met with mixed reviews, but after raking in almost $286 million at the domestic box office alone, it quickly cemented itself as a Christmas classic, and a sequel was put into production. Another notable addition to the film is that OG Kevin's older brother, Buzz , reprises his role in the movie, showing that this isn't a reboot or remake, but actually a sequel. Buzz is now a local police officer and is… well, not the brightest, to put it nicely.

While I worked in the EXTRA's casting department, I became very good friends with the set decorators I loved watching them pull the most insidental details together. It is interesting that I did not remember any of the details of the decorating of the Home Alone house. My only memory of the house was that it was very elegant and beautifully decorated.
